Loft Conversions

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS FOR HOUSE EXTENSIONS

Loft Conversion Structural Engineers in Dagenham, East London

Converting your loft can be expensive. It is ultimately rewarding and will add huge value to your property.
Did you know that not all homes can accommodate loft conversions? Before hiring an architect to draw up plans, it is worth consulting with a structural engineer, who can assess the structure of your building. Once you have been given the go-ahead that you can convert your property, you need to decide what type of conversion you would like.

What types of loft conversions are there?

Some of this may depend upon what type of property you have. You may be considering a modest roof-light conversion. This is where specialist windows are placed into the roof, to add natural light and ventilation.

If you have a bigger budget, you may want a dormer. You could also add at least one protruding extension, or even a hip-to-gable conversion. The latter works by extending the sloping ‘hip’ roof (at the side of your property) outwards to create a vertical ‘gable’ wall. This sort of build usually works on detached or semi-detached houses, as it involves extending a sloping side roof.

If you are looking to add a loft conversion to your house, it is highly recommended to appoint a structural engineer as soon as possible. They will assess the structure of your home and advise you on how to build your conversion, without compromising the integrity of the existing building.

Structural engineers’ considerations for a loft conversion

Many homeowners, who want more space in their property choose to add a loft conversion because it uses existing space and does not change the footprint of the house. A good quality loft conversion can add up to 20% to the value of your home. However, a poorly designed or built conversion can have detrimental consequences.

Loft conversions usually require structural modifications to the floor, roof, walls and the addition of a staircase. This is why you need to hire a structural engineer. Considerations must be made with regards to safely and efficiently heating, lighting and insulating your newly created room(s), as well as fire safety precautions.

If money is no object for your conversion, you might want to consider a Mansard loft conversion that runs along the whole length of the roof of your house. This will alter the angle of the roof slope, making it almost vertical. This is a more expensive option, but worth it for the extra space and head height. These are suitable for most property types.
