Understanding the need for Structural Engineers

14/12/2021

Structural engineering plans and modelling
Structural Engineers are an essential profession to work with when planning a new building or structure or altering an existing one. They deal with the design and calculations of structures that carry or support loads. Structural Engineers are tasked with analysing support beams, columns and other support devices for both buildings and non-buildings structures, to ensure that they are safe and structurally sound.

Their daily tasks consist of building designs and structural calculations, as well as site visits. During their site visits, they undertake a thorough inspection of different aspects of a building, including foundation, insulation, floors, columns, building envelope, infrastructure, curtain wall, and so forth.

Structural engineers are usually called in to inspect a project at specific stages of its completion. At that point, they undertake a detailed review of the entire building. They compare the approved plans with the actual building, to ensure that they align. Each building project, whether commercial or residential must meet the requirements of Building Control.
If they encounter any defects, they list them down and forward them to the builder. Until the necessary corrections are done, they cannot give the required approval.

When you are hiring a structural engineer to work on your building project, ensure that they are qualified and experienced. Ask them for projects that they have worked on that are like the one you are planning. If you would like more information about how a structural consultant can help your building project, give us a call on 020 8088 3834.
